AKSRA HOON LAKORN LEKGaruda Dance

2 December 2009  or  3 December 2009

The literature entitled “Unarut” by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great (King Rama I) leads to the dance in honor of His Majesty the King. The act features dazzling light and sound effects that support the airborne dance of majestic Garudas (mythical birds), that are promising to serve Narayana, a supreme Hindu god, by protecting all kinds of goodness. The act is aimed at wishing audiences to always have great, secured and healthy life.

Srichai Singha Dance

The dance of Apsara celestial maidens as carved at the Bayon stone temple is transformed into the beautiful and gentle Apsara dance on stage with the wonderful songs entitled Khorm Chom Jan (Khmer admires the moon) and Khamen Raew (Fast Khmer). This act is to wish audiences to enjoy the kind of wealth and prosperity that Cambodia had in the era of the Bayon temple.

Gliding Kinnaris

One part of the literature entitled “Manorah” depicts Kinnaris (half-human and half-bird mythical creatures) playing in the mythical forest named Haimmavanta. The dance features the puppets that wear neatly and punctiliously made costumes and are choreographed exactly in line with Thai classical dance and music. Yet “Aksra Hoon Lakorn Lek” manages to give an international touch to the act with Western musical instruments performed throughout this part of the play.

Monkey Warriors

The act refers to part of the Ramayana epic in which monkey Hanuman is leading his powerful monkey army. In the act, Hanuman is inspecting his monkey army before moving to a battlefield. It depicts the readiness and unity of the monkey army.

The Battle

Representing the greatness of the everlasting epic Ramayana, the act shows the battle between the army of Rama and that of Ravana. Rama uses his bow to beat Ravana so badly that the latter and his army had to retreat to his city Lanka. In the act, the mechanisms of puppets are applied to their fullest capacities to convey the complicated choreography of the Thai masked dance called Khon.

Japanese Dance

Dance from the land of sunrise and classical music are skillfully combined to tell the story of Nagasaki’s beautiful geisha Cio-Cio San from the great opera entitled “Madame Butterfly”. The special effects of backdrops, lights and sounds add to the beauty of the puppetry act that features Japanese-styled umbrella dance.

The Contest between Long Drum and Log Xylophone bands

Up to 40 puppeteers take part in creating the joy of music from the central plain (featuring long drums) and that from the northeast (represented by log xylophones). Bands of puppets are maneuvered skillfully as if they are real-life musicians who give loud and lively performances with styles.

Nora Dance

Nora, the famous dance of the south, that demands dancers’ superb skills in controlling their bodies and organs to match rhythms, are amazingly delivered with puppets. Nora of the Aksra Theatre is unique as it shows the simultaneous dances of both puppets and their puppeteers.

Arirang

Korean dance and the classic song Arirang are delivered with a set of specially created puppets that give the perfect performance of delicate and dazzling Korean fan dance.

The Dance of Seven Angels

Chinese angel puppets perform a sweet dance to wish audiences happiness and dreams coming true.
